BOWIE, Md.—As the July recruiting period disappears into the 2017 rearview mirror we once again had the chance to enjoy an event rising above the cesspool and carnival of self-promotional and financial enhancement efforts. The 7th annual Rites of Passage presented by Lisa Bodine and the Godmother Sports Foundation is an invitation only event for elite level prospects just beginning to make their marks on the recruiting stage of women’s basketball. This past May the 35 “invited” athletes to the USA Basketball U16 trials featured 10 Rites of Passage alums. Over the years four ROP participants have gone on to wear red, white and blue and one even wore the national colors of Puerto Rico. The exclamation mark on the Rites résumé are the two individuals who heard their name called on the night of their respective WNBA draft.
This year the Rites of Passage welcomed 68 athletes representing 16 states and the District of Columbia. The roster featured 39 players from the 2021 graduating class, 22 from ’22, 4 from 2023, and 3 more from ’24. The media and scouting services were out in force as always and the players on the floor offered up a glimpse of the promising future on the horizon of high school and club basketball. Of course, in a one day event we see some folk’s best minutes and others we might catch their less than successful ones. Whether we included them in this article or not, keep in mind that all the athletes invited were hand-picked and each has already shown the possibilities coaches like to see. We’re passing on listing heights based on current age, potential for growth and the wishful thinking of some of the numbers provided up front.
