SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The latest Blue Star Media Elite 25 boys’ basketball rankings are reflective of games through Sunday. One school from Ohio joins the Elite 25 and there is a shift among the Top 10 teams.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend produced several national events that helped reshape the rankings. I was at the Spalding Hoophall Classic at Springfield College’s Blake Arena, where several Elite 25 team competed. The Bass Pro Invitational in Springfield, Mo, was another influential event and Flyin’ to the Hoop in Ohio had some interesting results.
Moving on from the MLK events, they are billing it as “Tampa vs. the Country” and the ARS Rescue Rooter National Hoop Fest in Tampa, Fla. The action heats for two days at Berkeley Prep School on Friday but the real games with national significance are Saturday. The five games include: 12 p.m. Huntington (W.Va.) Prep vs. Victory Rock Prep (Bradenton, Fla.); 1:30 p.m. St. Benedict’s (Newark, N.J.) vs. Tampa Prep; 3 p.m. Berkeley Prep vs. Windermere (Fla.) Prep; 4:30 p.m. No. 7 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) vs. St. Petersburg (Fla.); and 6 p.m. No. 6 Montverde (Fla.) Academy vs. Tampa Catholic.
No. 25 Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) enters the Elite 25 after winning 13 straight games to open the season. The Crusaders are Ohio’s top-ranked largest classified school (Division I) and play in a one of the state’s top leagues. The path to the state championship in Columbus won’t be easy but Moeller has the right mix of players.
The Elite 25 rankings are back on January 24. Be sure to support your local high school teams and if you have a chance to attend a game, tournament or one-day events, please do so. We hope to see you at a game soon. — Christopher Lawlor
