Texas NCAA Fall Evaluation

DALLAS, Texas — The leaves will not be changing anytime soon in Texas, and there is no need for a light jacket or warm hoodie. Nonetheless, you can set your fall calendar around the annual release of the Pumpkin Spice Latte and the annual NCAA Fall Evaluation weekend.

The Future Stars and Shining Stars Showcases in the DFW area provided a look at some seniors playing the last games of their club basketball careers, as well as a glimpse of the high school season to come. Beyond the club schedule, the growing mix of high school teams in their own divisions is beneficial not only for those teams and players, but for college coaches and evaluators as well.

Here’s a look at some of the big performers whose star power stood out this weekend.

Sarah Andrews – 2020 – 5-7 – Point Guard – Irving MacArthur High School — Zippy, creative, no look, and all other types of passes at her disposal…Sees floor well…Throwing TD passes the length of the court…Sizzle to her handle…Shooting the three…Elite two way point guard

Achai Arop – 2019 – 6-3 – Post – DeSoto High School – Apparent that she’s still new to the game and learning…Athletic tools make her a natural runner and jumper….Gets up to board…Needs to fill out some and add to offensive game…Potential is noticeable

Mia Deck – 2019 – 5-8 – Point Guard/Guard – Frisco Lonestar High School — Shooter hit multiple threes…Vocal at the guard spot…Willing post distributor…Played more off the ball but can handle the point…Nice, long crossover…Hits contested mid range pull ups over defenders…Stock riser

Tavy Diggs – 2019 – 5-10 – Forward – Plano East High School — Lanky forward…Continues to add to her game…Hits the mid range jumper off the catch in trans…Moves well and is active without the ball…Can come off screens and score…Can score in bursts…Able to post low or step out to three point range

Evelyn Goetz – 2021 – 6-0 – Guard – Marcus High School — Tall, long wing guard…Also played a lot of point…Can hit the three…Handles well in transition…Has acceleration to get to the basket…Speed and strength are deceptive for her age and frame…One to watch

Myra Gordon – 2020 – 6-0 – Guard – LD Bell High School — Good size and strength…Impressive build…Demonstrates versatility…Smooth handle…Gets to the foul line

Hannah Gusters – 2020 – 6-2 – Post – Duncanville High School – Established prospect…Big, strong, and mobile…Gets position on the interior…Can take 3-4 dribbles in the open court or to clear pressure…Gets her own rebounds and goes up again…Vocal on defense…Doing many good things for her age and position

Taylor Hutchins – 2019 – 5-9 – Forward – Cedar Hill High School – “Beastly” all over the court…Stocky but strong…Gets up off the ground easily…Light on her feet and handles…Gets to the basket…High IQ is evident…Lefty…Flies around defensively…Rebounds out of her area…Match up problem…Different kind of player

Tamia Jones – 2020 – 5-6 – Point Guard – The Colony High School — High energy point…Shoots the three well for a lead guard…Good size and athleticism…Plays well especially on defense…Uses jabs and pass fakes to create space…Leadership already starting to show…Hit a couple big time runners in the paint

Jaleah Lafargue – 2020 – 5-10 – Guard/Forward – Lady Pumas Select – Ultra athletic forward…Emerging guard skills…Hustles…Explosive at times…Quick and aggressive…Will take on her own in transition…Can hold her own defending the perimeter…In your face type of player…Will catch on the wing, jab and go

Tommisha Lampkin – 2020 – 6-2 – Forward – Summit High School — Long and strong athlete at the forward spot…Can handle it in the open court…Comfortable catching it on the wing and jabbing or ripping to go to the basket…Big time rebounder…Will hit the pull up jumper in transition…Works for position in the paint…Not a finished product yet but has been on the map for some time

Dajinae McCarty – 2019 – 5-7 – Point Guard/Guard – Cedar Hill High School — Bigger combo guard…Can get off the floor…Solid handles…Emerging floater…Will shoot the tghree but can continue to develop in that area…Slashes her way to the rim…Has the athleticism and size to be dynamic

Jordyn Merritt – 2020 – 6-2 – Forward – Plano Senior High School – Long established elite level prospect…Another strong showing…Athletic rim runner type…Faces up and looks for the high-low…Can handle and score in transition…15 foot range is great…Gets to the line

Jaden Owens – 2019 – 5-9 – Point Guard – Plano West Senior High School – Highly regarded…Yo-yo string handles…Can get to rack and finish against contact…Pull up from mid range…Three is there…Freezes help defenders with ball fakes slicing to the rim…Had her own lay up drill at times

Simisola Odunsi – 2020 – 6-1 – Forward – Arlington Seguin High School — Well built forward…Mobile on defense…Runs the floor in transition…Has a good understanding of what to do…Physicality and competitiveness is coming…Size and big time athletic tools hold the potential…Next step is to continue learning and adding to her offensive game 

Hadley Periman – 2022 – 6-1 – Forward – NTX Elite Platinum — Showed improvement after solid summer…Fast on the rim run…Will block some shots…Fought for position inside…Can handle on her own in transition…The motor is there

Mariah Roberts – 2021 – 5-9 – Point Guard/Guard – Arlington Martin High School — Skilled young combo guard…Athletic…Pace of the game is different when she’s on the court…Gets to foul line as a result of her leaping ability and handles…Vocal for a young guard

Jewel Spear – 2020 – 5-9 – Guard – The Colony High School — Scoring guard…Shoots the three…Has a nice floater game at the second level…Will get her own rebound and go up again…Athlete with a motor and skill…Very dangerous

Makya Spears – 2020 – 6-6 – Post – Louisiana Elite White — Legit size in the post…Big hands and feet…Knows how to get position inside…Will go up and catch the lob pass…Keeps it high…Shot blocker…Continues to improve in her running and movements…Soft hands…Major advances when she starts scoring different ways inside

Diamond Sweats – 2019 – 6-0 – Guard/Forward – Lincoln High School — Big, strong kid…Runs and moves like a guard…Smooth in transition off a couple of bounces…Fluid mid range jumper…Shoots the three…Bouncy…Good energy…Watch for killer instinct to develop

Endyia Rogers – 2019 – 5-7 – Point Guard – Bishop Lynch — Strong scorer at the point guard spot…Scored at all levels…Drilled multiple threes…Great with the ball…Dynamic player…Lots of deflections and steals defensively

Alice Stevenson – 2020 – 6-0 – Forward – OK Swarm Blue Star 17U — Strong built forward…Can rebound, defend, and score inside…Seals for good position…Great athleticism for her build…Stretching range to the arc

Landry Williams – 2021 – 5-9 – Guard – OK PWP Elite 17U – Crew attention by way of her three point shooting…Strong build and good size on the wing…Just scratching the surface entering high school

Travis Ponton first joined the Blue Star family in 2016, and brings with him a decade of women's basketball coaching experience across multiple levels. A 2018 WBCA Thirty Under 30 Award recipient, his most recent stint was on the bench as an Assistant Coach at LIU Brooklyn. He's also served on the staff at Loyola University, Charleston Southern, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Mount St. Mary's. As a successful high school coach for four years in Virginia, Ponton had a hand in helping over 30 athletes take their game to the college level. With a degree in Journalism from Radford University, he has also previously worked with WTVR/CBS 6 Television in Richmond. Ponton still calls central Virginia home.
