With the fall signing period upon us once again in the same week as Veteran’s Day, I had some thoughts pass through my somewhat limited mind that I wanted to share. The reason that we can rank, celebrate, discuss, write about and generally have the world come to a standstill over an athlete’s choice of colors for their academic and athletic future is because others made their own choice that of wearing the uniform of our great nation. Yes, I know the actual holiday was yesterday and the country will recognize our veterans today, but I hope that the sentiment of appreciation for those who have served and those who are still in uniform will not come and go with the simple passing of just a Monday off and a long weekend.
This week we’ll find time to talk about the decisions and commitments of athletes with limitless enthusiasm and never ending debate. In particular, as the National Letters of Intent first get signed, we’ll analyze the needs of the programs, the impact potential of the signees as well as critique “fit” and “style” as if they’re critical national issues. With over 30 years in women’s basketball I understand that college decisions are genuinely important and the achievement is something for a young individual to be proud of and embrace both as an educational and personal opportunity. I would never minimize the magnitude of these consequential occasions for athletes, their families and the colligate programs.
What I would do, however, is suggest the need to take that utterly zealous mentality we have for a prospect’s athletic future and offer that same enthusiasm to anyone who has ever made the greatest commitment and signed on with Uncle Sam. If you want to talk about impact players and “true” All-Americans…these are your folks!!
“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave” Elmer Davis
To all who have ever served we say thank you by living our lives without forgetting while enjoying the freedoms you helped provide and have long ensured through your sacrifice. Our appreciation is unending.
