Bueckers out six to eight weeks with fractured knee

UConn star guard Paige Bueckers will miss six to eight weeks after suffering a tibial plateau fractured left knee at the end of the Huskies’ 73-54 victory over Notre Dame Sunday at Gampel Pavilion.
What she was even doing in the game with 38 seconds to play was a mystery, but she certainly paid a big price for Geno Auriemma’s decision to gamble with playing her this late in a blowout.
Bueckers, the reigning national Player of the Year, was leading the second-ranked Huskies in scoring (21.2 points), minutes (36.4), assists (6.2), steals (2.7) and minutes played.
Her injury came just four days after UConn announced prize freshman Azzi Fudd, the No. 1 recruit in the class, would miss at least two weeks due to a foot injury.
Bueckers collapsed in front of the Huskies’ bench and had to be carried off the floor in pain. The estimated time of return is Mid-January, ahead of UConn’s rematch against top ranked South Carolina Jan. 27 in Columbia. Veteran Evina Westbrook is expected to fill Bueckers’ role until then, but the injury will seriously affect the Huskies’ depth as they play games against Georgia Tech, UCLA and seventh-ranked Louisville on Dec. 19. Big East season starts Dec. 29.
