Mulkey joins USA U16 Women’s Team after McCoy withdraws due to injury

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — After training for three days as an alternate for the 2013 USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center., center Nancy Mulkey of Cypress Woods (Cypress, Texas) Wednesday was added to the team after the withdrawal of  Tori McCoy of St. Thomas More (Champaign, Ill.), who was unable to continue due to a concussion and its symptoms.

The 12-member team will continue its training camp in Colorado Springs through June 17, when the squad departs for the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship that will be played June 19-23 in Cancun, Mexico. Players eligible for this team must be U.S. citizens, born on or after Jan. 1, 1997.

“Obviously, we are disappointed to hear that we won’t be able to take Tori with us, but we are excited for the opportunity to coach Nancy,” said Sue Phillips , USA head coach and head mentor at Archbishop Mitty High School (San Jose, Calif.) and for the San Jose Cagers AAU. “Nancy has taken the same amount of reps as her teammates, and that’s why you have alternates. We will continue to get better daily, and I look forward to coaching this team in next week’s FIBA Americas U16 Championship.”

As a freshman at Cypress Woods, Mulkey averaged 9.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.6 blocks per game helping her team to the district championship.
