COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—With the USA Basketball U16 trial looming 158 athletes were scheduled to take the floor when the fun began last Thursday evening. Of that group 35 were selected by USA Basketball but one, Mikayla Boykin, was unable to attend because of injury. The rest were applicant participants who were looking to strut their stuff in front of the selection committee for the opportunity to wear red, white and blue.
When things finally tipped off 149 took the floor. After one cut of 57 athletes the remaining 92 took to the floor for one more session before the roster was trimmed a second time. Saturday evening and Sunday morning’s sessions featured 70 who survived those first cuts and looking to take another step when the roster was pared down once again Sunday afternoon. The final two sessions will feature40individuals who will compete for the 12 roster spots to be announced Monday morning. Up for grabs is the chance to represent the USA in the FIBA Americas U16 Championship beginning June 24 in Puebla, Mexico.
