NEW YORK CITY — The best young players in metropolitan New York City and surrounding states didn’t disappoint during the 4th annual NYGHoops Coast-to-Coast All-America camp held at Truman High School in the Bronx to start the year off.
Each year, impresario Joe Fenelon, the force behind nationally respected NYG Hoops report and social media sites, brings together the best available middle school talent in the New York City region. The 2020 edition reflected the shift in the game to mostly guard play with only 13 players listed 5’ 10” and above from the 130 participants.
The 2019 camp was loaded with a good selection of the top regional players from the Class of 2023, which is also a talented, guard-heavy class of players. After you got past the top players there was a drop off of talent. This year, there was a smaller group of top players but a more talented, deeper list of players – a better balance of rising talent in this camp.
This event is now the most important showcase for New York City regional player as it’s the place where most of the private and prep school coaches come to look for players to recruit to their schools. All the big high school programs (Christ The King, St. John’s Prep, St. Francis Prep, Long Island Lutheran, Westtown School, PA) had someone in attendance to measure the talent. Not far behind where the elite travel team coaches either watching their future talent or looking to recruit for their programs.
All in all – the NYGHoops Coast2Coast All-America camp was the place to be seen and also to be found and also be evaluated. In attendance besides Blue Star Media was Dan Olsen from ESPN who looked over the talent with present and future rankings in mind.
The jury will be out for another year as to how good this Class of 2024 (8th grade) will measure against the 2019 NYGC2C Class of 2023 (freshman) talent.
Without question the top five players in this event were all potential big time future recruits with Lauryn Swann, a 2019 Blue Star 30 selection leading the pack. Mikayla Blakes from the New Jersey Cardinals and Cristina Parrella from New Heights were dominate at the guard position. Makenzie Williams solidified herself as one of the top bigs on the East Coast with her outstanding ability and upside. Sophia LeGoullon from the Boston Showstoppers showed her wing abilities with upside to cement her position on the list.
Here’s a short list of the top players who impressed the most between the drill work and the full court play.
