BACK TO BACK: No. 1 Mater Dei (CA) captures another CIF-Southern Section Division 1 championship; three newbies join Blue Star Media Net 25 girls’ volleyball rankings

BENSALEM, Pa. – Less than two weeks remain in the girls’ volleyball season and the state championships are coming at a frenetic pace.

With everyone having completed or on the verge of finishing up, the Blue Star Media Net 25 rankings have begun to shift. Last weekend, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kentucky, Ohio and Florida crowned their champions and there are more on the way.

California and Texas are in play now with championships being contested on Saturday, Nov. 23 or the final day of the schoolgirl season.

The biggest news out of California is the state tournament gets underway this week and last weekend No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) claimed their second consecutive California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division 1 championship in straight sets over then-No. 7 Sierra Canyon School (Chatsworth). The Monarchs won’t have an easy road to the CIF Open Division final with the regional playoffs serving as a prelude.

Having said that, the Net 25 welcomes three teams with two moving in after knocking off ranked teams in state championship contests in Indiana and Florida. No. 21 Winter Park (Fla.) won the FHSAA Class 7A title and No. 22 Carroll (Fort Wayne, Ind.) claimed the Indiana Class 4A chip. Also joining is No. 23 Marist (Chicago), who defeated No. 24 and defending Illinois Class 4A state champions Mother McAuley (Chicago) in the sectional final. The Red Hawks lost twice to McAuley in the regular season but flipped the result when the stakes were higher.

This weekend the Illinois High School Association Class 4A state finals will be held at CEFCU Arena in Normal. Here’s the schedule:

Friday (All times Central)

7 p.m.: Huntley vs. No. 5 Benet Academy (Lisle).

8:30 p.m. (approx.): Lockport vs. (3) No. 23 Marist (Chicago).

Saturday

7:25 p.m. (approx.): Loser Match 1 vs. Loser Match 2

8:55 p.m. (approx.): Winner Match 1 vs. Winner Match 2

For the latest Net 25 rankings, there are three additions, six teams remaining the same, nine ascending (with six going up five slots) and three dropping, including two by nine positions.

That’ll do it for the first week of November. The Blue Star Media Net 25 girls’ volleyball rankings return on Wednesday, Nov. 20 for the penultimate set.

Bye for now.

We hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
