LAS VEGAS, Nev.—While July is around the corner and the NCAA Evaluation period will set the stage for some exciting and competitive events, it would be a challenge for any knowledgeable individual on the girls basketball landscape to find a deeper ratio of talent per participant than that which made up Blue Star 30 2018. Class by class, player by player the invitation only event brings together the “future” of the game like no other camp, clinic or tournament. The third edition of this exclusive, player focused combine wrapped up Saturday in Las Vegas at the Tarkanian Center. While Mike Flynn may not “own” Vegas and it’s doubtful too many folks will believe the image above has not been altered to some degree, there’s little doubt the Godfather and Blue Star hit a home run once again.
With players on the roster from 27 different states and the District of Columbia as well as representation from the USA and five other countries, it’s safe to say the selection process looked far and wide for those talented players making up all three classes of Blue Star 30 athletes. With a large majority on hand from years one (Chicago-2016) and two (D.C.-2017) there was already a high standard set for the prospects on the floor and the addition of 35 top tier athletes from the emerging classes took things to an even higher level than in the past.
The on floor coaching was headed up once again by Dr. Anthony Pappas and an elite staff of coaches. Guest speakers like Debbie Antonelli (Television analyst) and Lindsay Allen (WNBA) were on the schedule as was a FIBA qualifying 3×3 tournament presented by Metropath Sports. Friday evening included a “field trip” to the Las Vegas Aces game with the Los Angeles Sparks with chance to see A’ja Wilson, Candace Parker and all the rest in action up close and personal. Of course strong talent means competitive games and there was plenty of those to be had utilizing the Blue Star 7 rules and scoring. And, as always, the Nike gear was available in abundance…and then some!
