I know it was only Dixie State.

But Gonzaga’s 7-0 freshman Chet Holmgren, the No. 1 ranked prospect in the Class of 2021, has already given pro scouts something to think about.

Holmgren produced 14 points, 13 rebounds, 7 blocked shots and five assists as the top-ranked Zags defeated the Trail Blazers, who are making the transition to Division I, 97-63, in the season opener at Spokane, making an early case for himself as the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA draft.

“Chet’s spectacular,” said Brian Michaelson, who filled in as Gonzaga head coach Mark Few, who was suspended for a DUI. “He’s unbelievable. He should be celebrated.

“His work ethic is out of this world. He prepares for success.”

The slender Holmgren, who has drawn comparisons to a young Kevin Durant with his ability to impact a game multiple ways, was less excited. “It’s pretty cool,” he said. “I’m just happy we were able to come home with a win.”

Holmgren, who has a unique blend of size and skill, established himself quickly scoring six points and grabbing 5 rebounds in the first 10 minutes as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 23-4 lead. The 19-year old Holmgren, the highest ranked player ever signed by the Zags, did most of his damage in the first half when the game turned into a route and only played 10 minutes in the second half. Julian Stawther had 17 points and 10 rebounds as Gonzaga won its 52nd consecutive home game, dating back to 2018. Rasir Bolton, a transfer from Iowa State, added 15 points for the Zags, who were undefeated last season before losing to Baylor in the NCAA Championship game in Indianapolis. Player of the Year candidate Drew Timme added 11 for Gonzaga, who played a home game before a live crowd for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

the Zags shot 54 percent, but were just 2 for 13 in the first half before making 4 of their last 8 attempts from beyond the arc.

We should learn more about Holmgren and the Zags during a brutal non conference schedule. He will be tested throughout the Zags’ non-conference schedule. the Zags will play fifth- ranked Texas home Saturday, then will face 2 UCLA and 9 Duke thanksgiving week in Vegas. They also have 14 Alabama Dec. 4 in Seattle.
