COURT QUEENS: No. 2 Mater Dei (CA) rise in Blue Star Media Net 25 girls’ volleyball rankings with repeat victory at Durango Fall Classic

BENSALEM, Pa. – The Monarchs of Mater Dei in Santa Ana, California bagged the Durango Fall Classic championship for the second consecutive year. No. 2 Monarchs took on the best in the nation and beat two of the nation’s top teams in their final two matches at Durango High School in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was the highwater mark of the season for first-year head coach Dan O’Dell’s team. The Monarchs became the first team to win back-to-back DFC titles since Assumption (Louisville, Ky.) did it in 2017 and ’18.

In the final, the Monarchs knocked off No. 4 Marymount (Los Angeles) in three sets but the final one went to 28-26. Quite an ending to one of the top volleyball weekends this season. The Monarchs will play in the Nike Tournament of Champions Southwest at the Arizona Sports Facility in Mesa, Arizona on Oct. 4 and 5. Expect another national field assembled near Phoenix.

No. 1 Prestonwood Christian Academy (Plano, Texas) remains atop the Net 25 rankings but that could change quickly. The Lions have two losses but did win Volleypalooza last month. They advanced to the semifinals but fell to Mater Dei in three entertaining sets. The Lions aren’t scheduled to attend the Nike TOC, according to the school’s website.

We’ll have more next week about who is headed to Arizona but the field is traditionally top shelf.

So, the DFC brought change to the Net 25 with 17 shifting positions. Seven teams remained the same while 10 dropped and seven were on the rise. Florida schools No. 11 Plant (Tampa) fell 10 spots and No. 16 Carrollwood Day (Tampa) dipped 11. No. 4 Marymount zoomed up 15 spots and Mater Dei 11.

No. 18 Sierra Canyon School (Chatsworth, Calif.) is the lone newcomer to the Net 25 after an impressive showing at the DFC, going 6-1 with the lone loss to Mater Dei but did beat two ranked opponents. The Trailblazers are headed to the Nike TOC where they hope to make some more noise.

Two crosstown rivalry matches that can shake the Net 25 are No. 5 Mother McAuley (Chicago) vs. Marist (Chicago) on Thursday and No. 12 Assumption (Louisville, Ky.) vs. Sacred Heart Academy (Louisville) on Sunday. All four will reconvene the following weekend for a massive tournament in Chicago.

That’ll do it for the third week of September. The Blue Star Media Net 25 rankings return on Oct. 2.

Bye for now.

We hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
