Hungarian club Csata DSE already have a powerful reputation for bringing through rising stars and they enhanced their name after finishing first at an U14 tournament in their homeland recently.
Held in Sopron, home of the 2018 EuroLeague Women Quarter-Finalists, the competition involved 8 clubs, with 4 from Hungary, 2 from Spain, 1 from Czech Republic and 1 from Croatia.
Showcasing future FIBA stars of #FIBAU16Europe and subsequent editions, it was Csata DSE who took the top step of the podium as they beat Zsiros Akademia 84-40 in the Final. This was the ultimate outcome after a competition that began with the teams in two pools, with subsequent Semi-Finals, the Final and placings on the last day.
Most, if not all the clubs participating have either an already established or now burgeoning reputation as clubs who invest in youth basketball.
The performances of Czech powerhouse Zuzana Volsinska caught the eye and was one of the players of the tournament. She showed she can be erratic as 10 turnovers in a game would testify, but that rawness and huge minutes played at 14 years old will result in this. She had some huge games. These included a triple-double of 19 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals against Soproni. She also had 25 points, 17 rebo8nds and 7 steals against Pesci. How much of this is due to accelerated maturity or talent, we will see in coming years.
There were some other interesting players we will be following and you will be able to read about in due course here at BlueStar Media. For now, here is how the tournament played out.
Finally, before you read on – a huge respect to Sopron for hosting the tournament and not least, for many of the EuroLeague Women and Hungary national teams stars for staying and watching these young guns, presenting many of them with their ‘Player of the Game’ certificates!
