Dayton coach Anthony Grant has some serious concerns about legalized sports gambling where college basketball is concerned.
Grant didn’t specificlly used the words betting or gambling in a emotional post game press conference after his team defeated Davidson, but he did coment on the new laws that have made it legal in Ohio .
“There are some laws that have recently been enacted, that to me, it could really change the landscape of what college sports is all about, and when we have people that make it about themselves and attack kids because of their own agenda and it sickens me..
“They have families. They don’t deserve that. Mental health is real.”
David Jablonski of the Dayton Daily News tweeted Grants comments after his players received hate speech reaction following a one point loss to VCU. Dayton led most of the way but gave up the lead and lost the game in the final seconds afer a turnover led to the game winning basketball by the Ram’s Nick Kern.
According to a story filed by Jablonski, Flyers AD Neil Sullivan said athletes at his univesity have been receiving more hate messages on line since Jan. 1 than occured before the law was enacted.
“These are young kids,” Sullivan said. “and Im not going to add too much to that, but I’m a paid adult. If someones getting mad, they can get mad at me. They know where to find me. They’ve fond me many times.”
In response to comments from Grant and Sullivan, sports betting reporter Bennett Conlin reported taht the Ohio Casion Commission said it will look into banning Ohio gamblers who spread hateful message to college athletes.”
I’m surprised it’s taken so long for a coach to speak out, especially since 80 percent of the states could have spoorts betting legalized by the end of 2024..
I just hope we don’t see a rash of point shaving scandals.
