DECISION: Blue-chip and Ohio State-bound QB Quinn Ewers considering skipping senior season over NIL; according to report Southlake Carroll (TX) star stands to profit mightily

BENSALEM, Pa. – Could the Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) ruling that allows college athletes to profit off themselves and popularity claim one of the nation’s top prep quarterbacks?

Yahoo Sports reported on July 28 that Southlake (Texas) Carroll’s Quinn Ewers, the top quarterback prospect from the Class of 2022 and Ohio State commit, might forgo his senior season to enroll at the Big Ten school.

“I don’t really know, I don’t have a final decision made quite yet,” Ewers told Yahoo Sports. “I’m leaning toward leaving and going up to Ohio, just so I don’t have to deal with UIL stuff and can get comfortable with Ohio and Columbus and start to learn.”

Currently, the University Interscholastic League or Texas’ high school governing body prohibits any agreements that a student-athlete would profit from their name, image or likeness while in high school. Same goes for the National Federation of High School Associations or the national high school governing body.

Ewers is expected to announce his intentions this week.

According to Yahoo Sports, Ewers stand to profit around “one million dollars in the next year.”

Last season, the Ewers-led Dragons (12-2), No. 14 in the Blue Star Media Elite 25 final rankings, advanced to the UIL Class 6A, Division I championship game but fell to No. 1 Westlake (Austin), 52-34. Ewers threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns, cementing him as the nation’s top-rated player from the Class of 2022.

If Ewers remains at Southlake Carroll, the Dragons would be among the favorites for the Class 6A, Division I title in December. Historically, Carroll has won eight state titles. The decision also has ramifications on the Blue Star Media Elite 25 preseason rankings which will be released on Aug. 3.

Southlake Carroll is scheduled to open the season against Highland Park (Dallas) on Aug. 26 at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium–home of the Dallas Cowboys.
