Go-To 25 Boys’ Basketball Rankings, Feb. 19, 2013

BENSALEM, Pa. – This is the time of year that all players, coaches, parents and hoop aficionados wait: The postseason! That’s right, the state tournaments are in full swing nationally as California opened last week and Texas is on the verge and the sectional playoffs in New York and Pennsylvania are just lifting off. The Blue Star Media Go-To 25 high school boys’ basketball rankings are reflective of strength, power and no nonsense.

This week two teams join the Go-To 25 and several teams have shifted spots within the ranks. The biggest thud was No. 19 La Lumiere School (La Porte, Ind.) free falling 14 slots after losing decisively at Cathedral (Indianapolis). Granted Cathedral (five losses) is one the state’s top team, but the Lakers—stocked with several high-end prospects—shouldn’t drop this one. However, there’s always another chance.

Joining the Go-To 25 rankings is No. 24 Christ Presbyterian (Nashville, Tenn.) (29-2), which is currently on a 17-game winning skein. The Lions are considered a favorite for a Tennessee state title. Also making headway were No. 7 Whitney Young (Chicago), No. 18 Pershing (Detroit) and No. 20 Hudson Catholic (Jersey City, N.J.). Young and Pershing each bagged city titles fueling their rise in the Go-To 25 rankings.

The stakes keep getting higher as the calendar moves closer to March. Hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor

Varsity Letters

Player of the Week

Tyler Ennis, senior, No. 2 St. Benedict’s, Newark, N.J.: Talk about having a chip on your shoulder and sending a message to a blue-ribbon voting panel. Ennis, a 6-foot-2 Canadian guard, felt slighted when he was not chosen last week for the McDonald’s All-American Game. Instead of pouting he dropped a school-record 53 points in a 116-65 drubbing of Eastern (Voorhees) on Wednesday. Ennis scored 24 points in the opening half and added 25 in the third quarter. The Syracuse recruit was apparently red flagged by some McDonald’s voters—which I am one—questioning whether he’s a fifth-year player. McDonald’s frowns upon fifth year players. However, Ennis will play in the Jordan Brand Classic on April 13 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Additionally, Ennis followed up that smashing effort with a team-high 21 points and dished off six assists in the Gray Bees’ 65-37 win over The Hun School (Princeton Township) in the semifinals of the New Jersey Prep A Tournament Saturday.

Places To Be

Here’s chance to see the best of Chicago under one roof on one court. In what amounts to a preview of the Illinois Class 4A playoffs, the 18th McDonald’s City-Suburban Showdown at Chicago’s 10,000-seat House of Hope Arena. The facility is south of downtown in the Pullman neighborhood. There are three appetizing games, starting at 4 p.m. CT:

Game 1: De La Salle (Chicago) vs. Proviso East (Maywood):The game features two of the top-10 seniors in the state, Sterling Brown of Proviso East and Alvin Ellis of DLS. Proviso East, whose only loss last season came against Simeon (Chicago), in the 4A state final is regionally ranked by Blue Star Media.

Game 2: No. 7 Whitney Young (Chicago) vs. Benet Academy (Lisle), 6 p.m.: Whitney Young is led by 6-11 junior C Jahlil Okafor while Benet counters with 6-10 junior Sean O’Mara. Last weekend Young captured the Chicago Public School League championship.

Game 3: No. 12 Simeon vs. Marist (Chicago), 8 p.m.: This is a rematch of the 2012 Argo Sectional final. Simeon has won the last three Class 4A titles, featuring Duke-bound Jabari Parker, the reigning Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, and several other blue-chip prospects.
