Go-To 25 Boys’ Basketball Rankings, March 26, 2013

BENSALEM, Pa. – The results are nearly all in. After 50 state and the District of Columbia championships, the season is over for most. The only thing left is the National High School Invitational, which tips off on April 4 in North Bethesda, Md.

Seven of the eight teams in the Blue Star Media Go-To 25 high school boys’ basketball rankings will compete at the NHSI, with an eighth, Montrose Christian, looking to take down No. 1 Findlay Prep in the opening round at Georgetown Prep. Montrose Christian, which won the event in 2011, is a tough opponent no matter who it plays.

Kudos to No. 5 Mater Dei, No. 11 Christ the King and newcomer No. 19 Romulus for winning state championships. That boosts the Go-To 25 rankings state championship total to 11. No. 9 Prime Prep, an NHSI participant, and No. 15 Bishop O’Connell have won national tournament/conference championships in the past month. Seven schools in the NHSI do not compete for state championships, making this must-see event crucial to the final Go-To 25 rankings. The final rankings, both boys and girls, will be released on April 8, at noon ET.

Have a Happy Easter and Passover. Hope to see you at the NHSI or the McDonald’s All American Games in Chicago on April 3. – Christopher Lawlor

Varsity Letters

Player of the Week

Jon Severe, senior, No. 11 Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.): The uncommitted senior guard put on a record-setting performance last weekend at the New York State Federation Class AA Tournament in Albany. In the championship game, Severe pumped in a game-high 28 points and set the AA tournament record with 68 points in two games as the Royals clubbed Long Island Lutheran (Brookville), 73-64. In the semifinals, Severe was spectacular scoring a Class AA federation record 40 points, including his team’s first 12 in a 68-55 win over Bishop Kearney (Rochester). For the game he finished 12 of 18 from the field and 4 of 7 from three-point land. Severe, who was named New York’s Mr. Basketball, was annoyed that LIL’s Kentan Facey (a Connecticut recruit), was named the New York Gatorade player of the year last week. In the final, he took out his frustration on the independent team from Long Island. Severe was also named the Most Valuable Player and now will concentrate on selecting a school during the late signing period, which starts on April 17.
