Grinnell College continues to fall in love with its three point experiment.
the Division III school from central Iowa put up an NCAA all divison record 111 shots during its 123-67 victory over Emmaus Bible. All of them were threes.
Grinnell made 40 for the game and added four free throws. Interestingly, they shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half of the blowout at Darby Gymnasium.
“It was something I had wondered if it was possible for probably the last decade, just thinking about it, exactly how it would work, would it be feasible to do this for an entire game, and if you did it what would your shooting percentage look like?,” Grinnell coach David Arsenault told the Des Moines Register. “What could potentially be the other benefits in trying to play a game where you only attempted three point shots. It was certainly an interesting experiment.”
The number eclipsed the 109 three point shots Troy attempted in its infamous game against DeVry in 1992. The Trojans won, 258-141, in the highest scoring game in
NCAA history.
Adam Phillips led the Pioneers with 36 points on 12 of 24 shooting, while Moze Thurmgreen had a career high 24 points on 8 for 16 shooting.
This was not the first time Grinnell cracked Sports Center. They have set several records running “The System.” which focuses on taking threes and layups onlyy. Guard Jack Taylor scored an NCAA record with 138 points in a game in 2012.
He scored 109 in 2013.
Grinnell experiment has produced mixed results. The team is 4-6 this season and 2-2 in Midwest Conference play.
