It is one of those stories that is rather painful to pen, but we are very saddened by the news that young French star Loreen Kerboeuf has been diagnosed with a heart defect that is likely to end her burgeoning career as it is only just getting started.

She played during recent months for her country at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Udine, where she stood out with some excellent performances – including a 21-point effort in the opener against Latvia.

Just over a year ago, Kerboeuf was also celebrating a gold medal as France reigned supreme at the FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship in Sopron – a fantastic debut FIBA event for her.

The teenager had been looking forward to playing with Mondeville in the French League this season, but a medical assessment unearthed the problem and with sadness and regret, the club had no option but void her contract.

They stated: “She alone embodied our values, academic training  and sporting excellence. Indeed, we do not remember a single match where we did not see Loreen giving himself 100%, being solid in defense, motivated to rebound and throwing herself without hesitation to a ball lying on the ground.

“The energy which she deployed made her one of the most popular players of the public and the team. A little shy at first, she was not whenever she was on the floor.”

It is bitterly disappointing news and tough for any young person to have to take and so on behalf of Blue Star Media, I wish Loreen and her family all the best for the future.
