HOLD THAT TIGER: New Jersey power enters Blue Star Media Elite 25 boys’ basketball rankings after strong week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – It was a revealing weekend here at the Hoophall Classic on the campus of Springfield College.

First, the Blue Star Media Elite 25 high school boys’ basketball ranked teams were well represented. Some performed well and others, well, they met their match and were vanquished from the latest Elite 25 rankings for January 20, 2015.

Joining the rankings are No. 23 Garfield (Seattle) and No. 25 Linden (N.J.). Two teams from opposite coasts and well deserved. Garfield played cross-town rivals Rainier Beach on Monday and will need to win to stay. Linden enters having the most impressive run in the New York Metropolitan area. The Tigers knocked off then-No. 2 Roselle (N.J.) Catholic and Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.) at an event in Jersey City. Linden might be the best team in New Jersey currently. It’s a strange year in the Garden State with at least seven contenders to capture the coveted Tournament of Championships title in March.

Previous-No. 2 Roselle Catholic was thumped twice last week and dumped from the Elite 25 rankings. Ouch! We can’t recall such a precipitous drop.

The Dr. Martin Luther King weekend always produces great game, great events. The Hoophall was no different. Tournament organizer Greg Procino did a fantastic job of culling the nation for elite teams, players and coaches. Monday’s results at the Hoophall will be reflected in next week’s rankings, which appear on January 27.

One team that thoroughly impressed me was Sacred Heart (Waterbury, Conn.). The unbeaten Hearts defeated reigning New York State champions Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.) on Saturday. They become the first Connecticut boys’ team to appear in the Elite 25. Connecticut schools have little wiggle room in their schedules and it was well known they circled the date with CTK as their date with destiny. Well, it worked. The Hearts cracked the regional rankings and are a shoo-in to win the Class S state title.

Please support your local high school teams. There are plenty of great stories and players out there. Be sure to alert us if you have a story idea or special player in your community. Hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
