Dick Weiss on College Basketball

Not everyone thnks Gonzaga would experience the same success if the Zags joined the Big 12.

Bob Huggins of West Virginia is one of them.
“I would thnk it would be a tremendous awakening for Gonzaga,” he said.
Huggins thinks the Big 12 schedule andlong distance travel willl catch up to the Zags. “This is one of the toughest leagues in the country,” Huggins said..
“To get in this league and play who we play day after day would be a tremendous awakening. You don’t get to make your own schedule in the Big 12.”
Big 12 members Baylor and Kansas have won the last two national championships.
Gonzaga currently plays in the West Coast Conference, where the Zags have dominated play, winning or tying for the WCC championshp 20 of the past 22 years. They are currently in active discussions to shift to a Power 5 league, an idea which has interigued Big 12 commissoner Brett Yormark.
The Zags have yet to win an NCAA tournament title, but they have played in the Final Four two of the last five years and have produced a  11 NBA.first round picks
West Virginia knows how difficult life can be in the Big 12 after moving over from the Big East to accomodate football.  Huggins is a Hall of Fame coach but  the Mountaineers are coming off a 16-17 season in which they finished at the bottom of the league and had to do a major overhaul of their roster with transfers.
