HARRISBURG, Pa. – She blend into the fabric of a star-studded team such as the Philadelphia Belles U16. When you notice her unique name – named after an Egyptian goddess – Isis Thorpe begins to stand out.
With summer teammates Villanova-bound forward Megan Quinn (Episcopal Academy, Pa.), sharpshooter Kelly Hughes (Point Pleasant Boro High, N.J.) and Sydney Myers (Crestwood High, Pa.), this will benefit a player of Thorpe’s ilk.
Quietly, she nails a NBA-range 3-pointer. She slips past her defender for a quick deuce, or snatches a rebound over a player taller than her because of knowing the angles.
This is Thorpe at her best. The sinewy slasher, who is drawing the defenders before dishing to an open teammate on the wing as she did earlier this week at the 11th USJN Hershey National Showcase, is a rising senior with options.
That’s because she’s also drawing the attention of programs such as Saint Francis (Pa.), North Carolina State, Wagner, Princeton, Bucknell, Georgia Southern, Virginia Commonwealth and others.
Thorpe, a 5-foot-7 guard from Reading High in Pennsylvania, is turning heads on the floor usually those of the defender’s head on a swivel when she blows by them. As a junior, she was named Class AAAA Second Team All-State and all-district while leading Berks County with a 20.2-point scoring average.
Thorpe also contributed 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocks, completing her double-double in scoring and boards. Reading went 23-3 last season, getting upset in the District 3 playoffs as she concluded with 1,025 career points. The Red Knights won the Berks I League championship.
Thorpe is ready to seize the moment in July, with several pivotal events on the docket, most notably the USJN Nike Nationals in Washington, D.C., July 22-25.
This time she’s ready to stand out.
