LIONIZED: No. 6 Chaminade-Madonna Lions (FL) rise in Blue Star Media Elite 25 football rankings; No. 16 Sierra Canyon (CA) records blowout win over Arizona power
BENSALEM, Pa. – The month of September is nearly over and for the last two weekends, Blue Star Media Elite 25 football rankings has seen several byes, including last weekend when five teams were off.
That’s fine. Now the heavy lifting comes. Unless teams are granted byes in the playoffs, it’s a sprint to the finish line or in some cases a slog.
There are no additions to the Elite 25 this week. Some shifting among the ranks with a game in South Florida creating biggest change.
In Miami, No. 6 Chaminade-Madonna College Prep Lions (Hollywood, Fla.) jumped three slots after taking down a third straight opponent from the Elite 25, edging No. 20 Central (Miami), 31-28. The Rockets crashed 12 spots after their second loss of the campaign. The Rockets have played four games with a 1-2 record but one game was suspended due to inclement weather. (A.K.A. hurricane season in the south Atlantic and Caribbean waters). The losses are by a total of seven points. The Rockets will right the course by the time the Class 2M playoffs are revealed.
Last Thursday, the Lions (5-0) senior quarterback Cedrick Bailey enjoyed a sumptuous opening half, tossing four touchdowns passes, including two to wideout Jeremiah Smith, for a 31-21. Central’s rally fell short with a stout defense clamping down.
Top-ranked Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) visited the East Coast and survived a minor scare, beating St. Frances Academy (Baltimore), 20-7. The Monarchs (5-0), who tallied a pair of defensive TDs, broke away from 7-all tie in the third quarter. Phew!
The Monarchs are back home for the duration beginning with five straight Trinity League games, including the donnybrook with No. 5 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) on Oct. 13.
Okay, that’s it for another week.
The Blue Star Media Elite 25 football rankings return on Oct. 3. The month of October is the epitome of the regular season.
Stay safe. We hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
