The NCAA hammer has finally dropped on LSU football and basketball with reports that the school had received a notice of allegations in both sports.
The notice, which comes from the Complex /Case Unit, stems from multiple cases, including the Tigers’ ties to the federal basketball investigation became public in 2017. While details and specifics from the notice aren’t expected to be released until LSU complies with open records, sources told ESPN the allegations related to the basketball are significant.
The notice is expected to put coach Will Wade in the NCAA crosshairs. the LSU coach was suspended from the SEC and NCAA tournaments in March 2019 after Yahoo Sports reported Wade was on a wiretap talking about ”a strong ass” offer to a recruit. That call was eventually played on an HBO documentary, spliced with an interview with middleman Chris Dawkins saying Wade was 100 percent talking about money in his comment.
In the wake of the initial fallout from Wade’s offer, AD Joe Alleva stepped aside three days later after he reinstated Wade as coach in April,2019.
In NCAA documents obtained by ESPN in 2020, there are allegations Wade either arranged or offered impermissible benefits to at least 11 prospects.
Wade’s contract states the school can fire him without penalty if he is either found to commit or essentially charged by the NCAA with a Level 1 or 2 violation.
LSU has already self- imposed penalties to address the potential violations in the football program that are expected to be included in the notice.
LSU in considered a potential sixth seed in the NCAA tournament.
