No. 1 Columbus Explorers (FL) cement status in Blue Star Media Elite 25 boys’ basketball rankings; No. 10 AZ Compass Prep returns after strong January showing

BENSALEM, Pa. – If there were any doubters, No. 1 Columbus (Miami) had a national TV audience to show why they are clearly en route to a fourth consecutive Florida High School Athletic Association Class 7A state championship.

Though that’s not the big picture.

For the Explorers it was business as usual on Friday, Jan. 24 when the ESPN cameras were rolling the nation’s eyeballs were tuned in during the 79-59 victory over then-No. 2 Montverde (Fla.) Academy. To sum it up, the Explorers never trailed and were up 17-7 after one quarter and wound up a blowout. Montverde had no answers.

The Explorers have beaten eight teams from the Blue Star Media Elite 25 boys’ basketball rankings and Montverde twice. The two might hook up again in April at the CHIPOTLE High School Nationals in Fishers, Ind., but that’s more than two months out. Lots can happen.

As for Kevin Boyle’s No. 5 Eagles from central Florida, it’s a tough loss but not the end of the world. The Eagles need to bounce back in a hurry and that’s exactly what happens this weekend on their campus.

The Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament (MAIT) tips off for three days, starting Thursday at 12 p.m. inside the EdgeCenter for Sportsmanship and Wellness. The eight-team tournament has three Elite 25 teams and Nike EYBL Scholastic circuit. Additionally, the nationally ranked Montverde girls’ team plays one game per day. Elite 25 teams include No. 8 Utah Prep (Hurricane, Utah) and No. 10 AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.).

Here’s the schedule and way to get tickets.

In Maryland, the third annual A Very Melo Classic will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 in the APG Federal Credit Union Arena at Harford Community College in Bel Air (outside of Baltimore). It’s five supercharged games with three Elite 25 teams at an event named for future Naismith Hall of Fame addition Carmelo Anthony, who is from Baltimore, played for Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of the Wilson, Va.) and his son Kiyan (a Syracuse recruit) plays for Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.). The latter two tie-ins are participants Melo’s day of hoops.

The marquee matchup is No. 9 Long Island Lutheran vs. No. 14 St. Paul VI Catholic (Chantilly, Va.) in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. That’s must-see basketball.

Here’s A Very Melo Classic schedule and ticket information.

If you drive hours west from the Baltimore area, it’s another big-time event at the rural campus of Garrett College. The Western Maryland Classic is scheduled for this week on Jan. 30, 31 and Feb. 1. It’s also an EYBL Scholastic event and the seven games will be streamed on ESPN+. There are 14 games with five Elite 25 teams at the event that tips Thursday at 12:15 p.m.

Tickets are reasonably priced $10 at the door (12 and under are free) or purchased online.

Finally, the action is fast and furious on the West Coast, the rescheduled Trinity-Mission League Showcase at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood is Saturday, Feb. 1.

Here’s the six-game lineup (All times Pacific): Chaminade (West Hills) vs. Loyola (Los Angeles), 12 p.m.; Bishop Alemany (Mission Hills) vs. Crespi (Encino), 1:30 p.m.; Mater Dei (Santa Ana) vs. No. 25 St. John Bosco Bellflower), 3 p.m.; Brentwood vs. Campbell Hall (Studio City), 4:30 p.m.; No. 3 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City) vs. St. Francis (La Canada), 6 p.m.; Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) vs. Sierra Canyon School (Chatsworth), 7:30 p.m. Tickets are here.

Well, there are plenty of events from coast to coast to keep you entertained. Take advantage of the opportunity to view the future talent.

This week the lone addition is No. 10 AZ Compass Prep. The Dragons return after a month’s  absence and will get a chance this weekend to ascend the Elite 25 at a major tournament in Florida. There were four teams that maintained their positions, 12 dropped and eight went up. The biggest upward movement was No. 4 Brewster (Wolfeboro, N.H.) a plus-five and four dipped five slots.

The season is moving quickly and Florida is less than two weeks out from district tournaments.

Records smashed

In California, two brothers in the same contest set single-game state records on Thursday, Jan. 23. Nick and Dylan Khatchikian of Armenian Mesrobian School (Pico Rivera) recorded landmarks in a 119-25 hammering of Waverly (Pasadena). Mesrobian led 79-0 at halftime.

Nick scored 102 points in just 22 minutes, sinking 48 of 60 shots from the floor, setting the new California Interscholastic Federation mark. His brother, Dylan, had a triple-double (15 rebounds and 13 steals) but his 35 assists was the key number (31 was the previous record). It tied the National Federation record set by Andre Colbert of DeSales (Lockport, N.Y.) in 1987.

Okay, that’s it for the third week of January and we’re on the cusp of February. The Blue Star Media Elite 25 boys’ basketball rankings return on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

In Southern California, people are in need after the wildfires continue to ravage the surrounding Los Angeles area.

According to published reports, the deaths are mounting and countless structures and homes have been incinerated. As of Monday, Jan. 27, the weather forecasts called for more rain and that means mudslides and more destruction.

Consider donating here to the Red Cross to assist the relief efforts or to The Salvation Army. No dollar amount is too small and prayers are always welcome. Stay safe California.

Don’t forget it is the Lunar New Year to many from China, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam on Wednesday, Jan. 29. FYI: it’s the Year of the Snake.

Bye for now.

Hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
