No. 1 Mater Dei (CA) Monarchs continue to rule Blue Star Media Elite 25 football rankings; No. 10 Hoover (AL) secures Class 7A, Region 3 title and moves up after big win

BENSALEM, Pa. — For the viewers on the East Coast, Saturday night’s game from California was the perfect capper to a cool, autumn afternoon. And thankfully it was carried by a local cable network.

Then-No. 12 Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) at No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) were the rankings for the Trinity League rivals entering game and it was worth staying way past our bedtime.

Running back Quincy Craig had a crazy stat that essentially changed the course of the game: five carries for 19 yards. However, his final four carries went for touchdowns, including one late in the second quarter for a 24-17 lead. Craig was named player of the game by Bally Sports SoCal which televised the game. He entered the game with one TD in the six previous games. The Monarchs (7-0) ruled, again, winning 46-37 at the Santa Ana Bowl before nearly 10,000. The game sold-out to the general public in two minutes.

Tremendous theater from Orange County, California. The stadium lights even went out with 4:44 left in the game. And no there was no Hollywood finish only Mater Dei head coach Bruce Rollinson improving to 28-3-1 against the Friars during his 33-year run on the sidelines. Rollinson calls this game the biggest each season. It means more than St. John Bosco, which in recent years has more of a national feel with the winner taking home a state championship.

Elsewhere, two teams from the Blue Star Media Elite 25 high school football rankings lost to an opponent from the rankings. We already rehashed No. 13 Servite, which slipped one slot following a loss to the Trinity League rivals.

No. 10 Hoover (Ala.) zoomed up 10 spots after taking down Alabama’s No. 1 team from Class 7A Thompson (Alabaster). No. 12 Thompson dipped six spots after a last-second 24-21 loss to the Bucs (10-0). Both teams have the week off before the 7A first round starts on Nov. 5. Good chance they meet again in the playoffs. They’ve met for the last four years in the semifinals. The rematch will likely occur, barring a major upset, with much more than the Region 3 title at stake.

The playoffs in Ohio, New York and Illinois have been drawn up and get started this weekend. Several others are going or will be in the coming weeks. Next up are states such as New Jersey, California and Florida.

So, that’s a wrap for the fourth weekend in October. The Blue Star Media Elite 25 rankings return on Nov. 2. Have a Happy Halloween this upcoming weekend; stay safe!

We hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
