No. 1 Mater Dei (CA) rolls in showdown with archrival; teams from California, Maryland and Florida join Blue Star Media Elite 25 football rankings

BENSALEM, Pa. – It wasn’t much of a game but simply a good old fashion blowout. No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) is the best schoolboy football team in the land. And that’s not an exaggeration.

In a dreamy matchup of the No. 1 vs. 2 from the Blue Star Media Elite 25 football rankings, quickly turned into a rout with Mater Dei trouncing St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), 59-14, on Friday night. That victory clinched the Trinity League championship for the 8-0 Monarchs, who have their season finale this weekend.

The Braves (8-1) will look to regroup this weekend hosting JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano). The teams could meet again in the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. The Monarchs will be a heavy favorite to win it all again and run the table with four playoff games. They face No. 21 Orange Lutheran on Friday.

The Monarchs were up 45 points by halftime and to make matters worse for the Braves, there was a running clock in the fourth quarter. It was the worst loss for coach Jason Negro since taking over the program in 2010.

Quarterback Dash Beierly carved up Bosco, hitting on 20 of 28 passes for 309 yards and four touchdowns, including three in the opening half.

No. 7 St. John Bosco dipped five positions with the lopsided loss.

Three familiar teams enter the Elite 25 after a topsy-turvy week that saw six teams absorb losses.

No. 15 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) is unbeaten in eight games and would likely be the opponent for Mater Dei in the CIF Open Bowl game in December. No. 22 Lakeland (Fla.) is 8-0 and one of the favorites to win the FHSAA Class 5A state championship. A year ago, the Dreadnaughts won the program’s ninth state title. They close out the season on Nov. 6 at Sebring.

No. 25 DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) is 7-1 after knocking off Washington Catholic Athletic Conference rival St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.). The Stags finish up the regular season this weekend with the playoffs on the horizon. Their lone loss was on opening night at No. 14 Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.). The WCAC Capitol Division final is Nov. 24 at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

As for the rest of the Elite 25, three teams dropped, including No. 24 Gaffney (S.C.) 11 slots; 12 ascended, including three teams by three spots; and seven teams remained the same.

In Alaska, Dimond (Anchorage) beat West Anchorage, 14-7, in the Division I final and Soldotna topped Lathrop (Fairbanks), 49-28, for the Division II crown. Last week, Homer won the Division III title. So, with it the first three state championships of the season. Congratulations to the winners!

That’s a wrap for another week. The Blue Star Media Elite 25 rankings return on Nov. 5.

I’m Just Saying: In less than a week, college basketball season tips off. Hard to believe it’s already here and for the next five months the hardwoods will be rocking. We’ll have a prediction next time.

Please donate to the relief efforts for the recent hurricanes at the Red Cross. No amount is too small.

Finally, Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, Nov. 3., so turn your clocks back an  hour.

Bye for now and have a Happy Halloween.

We hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
