No. 13 Hoover (AL) halts long win streak, No. 2 Incarnate Word (MO) extends its to 88 games; Nicole Melious and her 3K odyssey on Staten Island (NY)

BENSALEM, Pa. – For the next two months the national high school girls’ basketball scene is in playoff mode.

Somewhere some place there will a state or conference that will be playing a tournament to determine an overall champion and that started last week in Florida and Indiana and goes until late March. Once the states and District of Columbia are completed, the coveted GEICO High School Nationals will be played in Fort Myers, Florida on the first weekend in April. That’s followed a week later with the GEICO State Champions Invitational.

It’s a great time of the year. Championship galore and lots of shiny hardware exchanging hands. In most states, it’s one-and-done format, where the losing team goes home.

However, there’s a twist with the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Open Division, where eight teams from near Los Angeles are placed into two pools and play down to an overall champion. Regardless, all eight teams advance to the CIF-Southern Region tournaments for a chance to play in the state final on March 10 or 11 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

Yet the Open Division sectional title is a coveted chip. Three teams from the Blue Star Media Elite 25 girls’ rankings, No. 1 Sierra Canyon School (Chatsworth), No. 10 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and No. 12 Etiwanda, will be vying for it and then likely again a few weeks later in the regionals. Here’s the schedule and two pools.

Undoubtedly, California will have a major say in the Elite 25 final rankings that will drop on April 10.

This week the Elite 25

Nicole 3K

Finally, one of the nation’s more underrated players, senior guard Nicole Melious of Susan Wagner (Staten Island, N.Y.), cracked the 3,000-point barrier last week and through 23 games, she’s averaging 43.7 points.

That’s eye watering!

She’s scored 3,001 points in three seasons (she lost one season to the pandemic) and is the New York Public Schools Athletic League all-time leading scorer (boys and girls) and fourth in New York City history.

According to several analysts, Melious is a serious candidate for the New York State Player of the Year. Since she did not get selected for the McDonald’s All American Game, Melious can still win the Gatorade state player of the year because she’s a high-A student in the classroom and that’s a key criterium for the Gatorade selection committee.

Surely, she’ll be selected to a national senior all-star.

We’ve watched her play in high school and with her club team Hoopers NY.

Simply put, Melious is an unselfish, hard-working combo guard who fill it up from distance, attack the rim, set up her teammates and defend. She averages 12.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists with six triple-doubles and 14 double-doubles this season.

Melious originally committed to Georgia Tech but wound up signing with La Salle (a real recruiting coup for Explorers coach Mountain MacGillivray) to remain closer to home. She will enjoy a prosperous career at the Atlantic 10 school in the Philadelphia.

Before she finishes her prep career, there’s unfinished in her back yard. The Wagner Falcons are 22-1 and unbeaten in league play (Tuesday closed out regular season). But winning the elusive PSAL AA Bracket or the overall big-school city title next month at Barclays Center in Brooklyn is the final quest. Last year, the Falcons lost to South Shore (Brooklyn) in the AA final and the two are on a collision course for the title game rematch.

Her No. 10 jersey eventually will be retired to the rafters at Wagner’s gym but that legacy will live on.

Kudos, Nicole!

We’re outta here for another week.

The Blue Star Media Elite 25 girls’ rankings will return on Feb. 15. We’ll have more on the state tournaments and whatever else is percolating.

Be safe.

Hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
