BENSALEM, Pa. – Two of the nation’s toughest, prestigious boys’ postseason tournaments are ready to roll and two more are on hold for at least another week.

First, the CIF-Southern Section Open Division was revealed Sunday afternoon. The tournament features eight powerhouse programs from the Los Angeles area split into two four-team pools. Each team plays three days and the winner of each pool plays for the overall title on Feb. 28. Even if a team loses during pool play, they can qualify for the various Southern California Regional tournament with that winner facing the Nor Cal winner for an overall state crown.

This year’s tournament features Sierra Canyon School, Corona Centennial, Rancho Christian, Etiwanda, St. Anthony, Harvard-Westlake, Mater Dei and St. John Bosco. Sierra and Corona Centennial are top seeds in Pools A and B, respectively.

The Philadelphia Catholic League’s 10-team tournament is considered one of the best. What makes this event so special is the semifinals (on Feb. 19) and final (Feb. 24) are contested at the famed University of Pennsylvania Palestra. Wow! That’s aces. Archbishop Wood claimed the top seed and gets a bye to the quarterfinals on Friday. Bishop McDevitt is second seeded, Neumann-Goretti slipped two spots in the final week to third and Bonner & Prendergast is fourth. Preseason favorite Roman Catholic is fifth.

If you have not attended a game at The Palestra, you must. It is the Cathedral of Basketball.

The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and New York Catholic High School Athletic Association (or the New York Catholic League) are playing out the regular-season string and will start competition later this month. New York has two layers of tournaments before crowning a champion that will compete at the New York Federation Class AA tournament in March against three other state winners from the PSAL, Independent and Public School. The feds will be played for the first time in New York City at Fordham University’s venerable Rose Hill Gymnasium in the Bronx.

There are several state sanctioned tournaments to keep an eye on especially those in Texas, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Indiana, Kentucky and Washington.

No. 12 Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.) jumps 10 spots in the Elite 25 after an impressive victory over No. 13 Sierra Canyon. Bravo, coach John Buck and the boys. There was movement with 10 teams rising and seven were static. By the way, Sierra dipped seven places after the loss in New Jersey.

Since there are no additions to the Elite 25 boys’ rankings, we’ll update the GEICO High School Nationals.

Definitely in: Montverde Academy, Wasatch Academy, La Lumiere School and Oak Hill Academy.

Under consideration: Since states such as South Carolina, Maryland, Georgia, Nevada, Washington, Florida, Arizona and Utah are in play, at least two state champions will get the invitation. That means Grayson (Ga.), Dorman (S.C.), Bishop Gorman (Nev.) and Eastside Catholic (Wash.) remain frontrunners. We’re still waiting on the WCAC to make a decision if their champion would go and DeMatha is the chosen one through mid-February.

Prolific Prep (Calif.) and St. Frances Academy (Md.) are pushing hard. St. Frances scored an emphatic win over Oak Hill last weekend but have the MIAA A Conference playoffs and the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament left to navigate. Prolific toils on the Grind Session circuit with a pair of McDonald’s All Americans that could persuade GEICO officials from Paragon Marketing, who present and run the annual hoops bonanza.

We’re feeling four or five independent schools will get bids and up to four National Federation sanctioned winners will round out the field. However, there’s plenty of high-profile games to be played.

My early ballot (no particular order) has Montverde, Grayson, Dorman, Wasatch Academy, Oak Hill Academy, La Lumiere, DeMatha (if permitted to attend) and IMG. St. Frances and Prolific are on the bubble. Montverde is the clear top seed.

The GEICO Nationals are a fluid situation and a strong finish is imperative.

We’ll update the GEICO Nationals each week and shed light on the eight teams that will make it to Father John Savage Gymnasium on the campus of Christ the King High School in the Queens neighborhood of Middle Village tipping on April 2.

The Blue Star Media Elite 25 boys’ rankings will return Feb. 18.

Hope to see you at game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
