BENSALEM, Pa. – Quinn Ewers, the nation’s top-rated quarterback from the Class of 2022, has checked out of Southlake (Texas) Carroll and enrolled a year early at Ohio State, according to a published report.
Ewers, who verballed to the Ohio State Buckeyes last November, is headed to college a year early after reclassifying. Yahoo Sports first reported on July 28 that Ewers might forgo his senior season to enroll at the Big Ten school over a Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) ruling.
The University Interscholastic League (or Texas’ high school governing body) prohibits any agreements that a student-athlete would profit from their name, image or likeness while in high school. Same goes for the National Federation of High School Associations–the national high school governing body.
According to Yahoo Sports, Ewers stands to profit around “one million dollars in the next year” for his NIL. His social media sites on Twitter and Instagram are a hit with fans worldwide.
Ewers was expected to enroll at Ohio State in January 2022 but that plan has been scrapped. According to an Ohio State fan site, Bucknuts, Ewers will be a member of the Ohio State’s fall camp that kicks off on Aug. 3.
That’s a major blow to Southlake Carroll (12-2), which finished No. 14 in the 2020-21 Blue Star Media Elite 25 final rankings, advanced to the UIL Class 6A, Division I championship game but fell to No. 1 Westlake (Austin), 52-34. Ewers threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns, cementing him as the nation’s top-rated player from the Class of 2022. In two seasons, Ewers passed for 6,445 yards and 73 TDs.
He’ll now compete for time at quarterback with favorite redshirt freshman C.J. Stroud, Jack Miller and freshman Kyle McCord (from St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia), who enrolled last January and competed in the spring workouts.
As for Southlake Carroll, the Dragons were potentially a top-10 team when the Blue Star Media Elite 25 preseason rankings will be released on Aug. 3. That lofty status has been severely damaged with Ewers’ departure.
The Dragons, who last won a Texas state title in 2011, open the season against Highland Park (Dallas) on Aug. 26 (on ESPNU, 8 p.m. ET) at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium–home of the Dallas Cowboys.
