BENSALEM, Pa. – Round 1 is in the books and the newly-minted No. 1 football team in the Blue Star Media Elite 25 rankings is Mater Dei (Santa, Calif.).

That’s for now. The season isn’t quite over but Mater Dei notches a quality victory on the road.

A year ago, Mater Dei lost to St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) in the regular season only to turn the tables in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs and eventually bag the CIF Open Division Bowl Championship and Blue Star Media National Championship. Well, last Friday the Monarchs reigned supreme and clinched the Trinity League championship after a 38-24 victory over then-No. 1 St. John Bosco. Quarterback Bryce Young threw for 256 yards and three scores and ran for two more.

Mater Dei had an answer the entire game and SJB was baffled. Too much pitch-and-catch combination of Young and WR Kody Epps as they teamed up for three touchdown passes.

Simply put, the Monarchs were a “royal pain” in the neck.

The No. 3 Braves suffered their first loss of the campaign, slipping two spaces and allowing No. 2 Duncanville (Texas) to rise a spot in the Elite 25. Duncanville is Texas’ top-ranked Class 6A team and has two games left in the regular season.

Back in southern California, Mater Dei and SJB will conclude the regular season this Friday and await the draw for the Southern Section playoffs that kick off on the weekend of Nov. 8-9.

Expect Round 2 to be played in the Southern Division playoffs. That’s when the stakes are taken to another level.

Now that the Elite 25 donnybrook is complete, it back to the close of the regular season. For the second time this season the Elite 25 remain static. That won’t be the trend once the playoffs get underway in the power states such as Texas, California, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Illinois, New Jersey and Ohio.

Speaking of the postseason here’s a shout out to 49th state or the Last Frontier.

Well, Alaska was the first state to compete its season and wrapped up football last weekend when South Anchorage stopped Service (Anchorage), 27-13, in the Division I (large school) championship. The temperatures in Anchorage on Friday were hovering around 40 degrees with rain. The previous weekend, Soldotna won the Division II title and Houston took home the hardware in Division III.

Congratulations to all three Alaskan champions!

The Blue Star Media Elite 25 rankings will return on November 5.

If you haven’t already attended a game this season be sure to get out this weekend. Enjoy Halloween in your hometown. We hope to see you at a game soon. — Christopher Lawlor

Young gave his team a 38-17 lead on a 7-yard run heading into the fourth quarter. The Monarchs wasted little time in the first taking a 14-3 when Young scored from the 1 and hooked up with WR Kody Epps for a 51-yard scoring strike.
