Second to None: No. 22 Whitney Young of Chicago bags Class 4A title; re-enters Blue Star Media Go-To 25 boys’ basketball rankings

BENSALEM, Pa. – Three schools from the Blue Star Media Go-To 25 boys’ basketball rankings won state championships last weekend.

That pushes the total to 15 state champions, with California and Indiana the remaining states yet to crown their winners. With the final weekend of championships upon us, all that remains is the sixth Dick’s Sporting Goods High School National Tournament from April 3 to 5 in New York. All eight teams in the event are among the Top-13 teams in the Go-To 25.

No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) is one win away from a state championship in California’s Open Division and the Blue Star Media Go-To 25 National Championship. The task won’t be easy on Saturday in Sacramento as the opponent is Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland) and super junior Ivan Rabb.

Additionally, No. 9 Arsenal Tech (Indianapolis) and McDonald’s All-American Trey Lyles goes for the Indiana Class 4A title Saturday against Lake Central.

Kudos the newly minted champions: No. 18 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio), No. 19 Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia), No. 21 Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.) and No. 22 Whitney Young (Chicago).

By the way, No. 22 Whitney Young is back in the rankings after enduring a long season that culminated with a Class 4A state title.

Perhaps the most emotional state champion is Ja’Quan Newton of Neumann-Goretti, whose mother, Lisa Brown, passed away last Thursday from cancer. Her son was a one-man wrecking crew as the Saints won the Class AAA championship. Newton poured in 33 points and concluded a brilliant prep career with 1,972 points. Newton is headed to Miami in the fall and will carry the memory of his 38-year-old mother—who was beloved at the South Philadelphia school and taken far too early. Our condolences to Ja’Quan and his family as they grieve.

The final Go-To 25 rankings will appear on April 7. I’ll be at the McDonald’s All-American Game in Chicago and then jet back to New York for three days of basketball bliss at the Dick’s Nationals.

Hope to see you at a game soon. – Christopher Lawlor
