Silver talks about NBA holding regular season tournament

NBA commissioner Adam Silver is showing himself to be a visionary by thinking outside the box.

In an attempt to turn the league into a year round sport, Silver has taken a page of out the European soccer with his thoughts about making the regular season more interesting with a mid-season tournament involving all 32 teams

that would wind up with the semi-finals being played at a neutral site in Vegas.

Silver told CBS.com the first few rounds of the tournament would be on home courts. Teams would be divided into groups of five and play eight round robin games to determine a group winner. The six group winners and the two second place teams with the best record would advance to an eight team knockout tournament in Vegas some time after the All Star break. It might work if the NBA didn’t have playoffs but right now teams might be reluctant to play their best players until the later stages of any regular season event like this.

Still, it is an idea worthy of exploring down the road.
