BENSALEM, Pa. – The Blue Star Media Elite 25 boys’ basketball rankings were reshaped after a tumultuous week of postseason games. Seems like California, Georgia and Texas inflicted the most damage.

There are three newcomers to the Elite 25, including one that re-enters following a remarkable run in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs in fertile southern California. No. 16 Norcross (Ga.), No. 17 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and No. 24 Allen (Texas) slide into the rankings. For Mater Dei it marks a return after capturing the Southern Section Open Division title. Norcross and Allen could be state champions a week from now.

We’re also ready to report the GEICO Nationals are zeroing in on their eight-team field for the event that tips off on March 29 at the Christ the King High School in Middle Village, N.Y. It’s safe to say Montverde (Fla.) School, Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) and likely La Lumiere School (La Porte, Ind.) will be four schools from the private school pool.

On the public school side, things are still muddled, but Garfield (Seattle) is in after claiming the Washington Class 3A state title and so is Shadow Mountain (Phoenix) while University School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Norcross (Ga.) can clinch spots by winning state championships this weekend. This is not set in stone as a few other schools are making a late push for inclusion.

There is one storyline developing at Oak Hill Academy, where for the second straight week there’s an issue with a fifth-year player on the roster. Unbeknownst to school officials and coach Steve Smith, the student-athlete in question is from Canada is Maurice Calloo and played briefly as an eighth grader. However that player has been dismissed from the team and was a role player who played in just 19 games this season. He’s also being suspended from the school, according to sources to the situation. Apparently the player “duped the school’’ on his eligibility (he also attended St. Joseph in Huntington, W.Va.). OHA self-reported the issue when it recently discovered that player had appeared on a roster as an eight grader. This should not affect No. 2 Oak Hill’s eligibility for the GEICO Nationals and the Warriors remain in the Elite 25 rankings. Essentially OHA is exonerated.

OK, moving on in the world of prep basketball.

DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) added two key pieces of hardware to its trophy. The Stags won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and Maryland Private Schools titles and could complete the treble later this week in a remote city in western Maryland.

This weekend is the prestigious Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament to be played Thursday through Saturday at Frostburg State University in Maryland. Thursday’s first round pairings—featuring two teams from the Elite 25—are No. 9 Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.)-Bishop Walsh (Cumberland, Md.), 4 p.m.; Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.)-Mount St. Joseph (Baltimore), 5:45; St. Maria Goretti (Hagerstown, Md.)-No. 8 DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.), 7:30; and St. Frances Academy (Baltimore)-Bishop O’Connell (Arlington, Va.), 9:15. Gonzaga and St. Frances are ranked in the East Region.

Hopefully the GEICO Nationals field will be revealed sooner than later but aforementioned eight teams should compose the field barring an upsets.

The Elite 25 rankings return on March 13 and state playoffs will once again play a prominent role. So enjoy the games wherever you are.

Hope to see you at one soon. – Christopher Lawlor
