MEMPHIS, Tennessee—Up and down the Mississippi River water levels are approaching flood stage and setting records that residents would rather not see broken.  The folks in Memphis and the Mid-South are used to Ole man river and his moody current so life on the bluffs flows on just like the water.  Part of life in June is the Insider Exposure Junior All American Camp.  In it’s fifth year, the event once again offered a brief and much needed respite from the jam packed tournament schedule along with a quick appetizer of skills and drills to keep players focused on the growth of their game.

Over the course of two days, two groups took to the floor of the H.W. Cox Community Center in Collierville getting a dose of Tony Condra’s teaching, energy and enthusiasm.  Blue Star Media and a host of national evaluators caught the skills and subsequent scrimmages getting a good look at some prospects both known and new.  Almost 150 athletes combined to make up both divisions while representing 27 different states on the map.  As always we can’t include everyone and they’re listed alphabetically so nobody should be reading anything into the order.  Some events we find ourselves leaving players out for consistent reasons. This event had some guards who struggled with shot selection and being a good teammate.  The ability to get a shot off doesn’t in and of itself make it a good shot to take.  Parents and coaches who are yelling good shot just because they let it fly aren’t helping their favorite player improve.  One of the things every coach, recruiter and evaluator asks when watching a player is “does she make the teammates around her better?”  Unfortunately, we saw some young players getting off on the wrong foot in that department this weekend.  We’ll be watching closely to see if they become that teammate that everyone wants to play with in the future.

And yes…we had jerseys without numbers on the front once again.  Event director John McGraw was a good sport about the ribbing but it’s still an issue that needs addressing at all events where recruiters, evaluators and media are present.  If one player isn’t identified correctly or finding out who they are costs time we could be watching other athletes we’re wasting somebody’s time and money (Mom, Dad).  Follow the link below to a story run earlier this year as a reminder for coaches and event operators.  Accountability folks!
