THRILLER: Mater Dei (CA) wins CIF-Southern Section Open Division crown on Lalani White’s buzzer-beater; No. 7 Monarchs move up two slots in Blue Star Media Elite 25 girls’ rankings with regional looming

Girls Elite 25

BENSALEM, Pa. – If you can believe it, California and Oregon finally wrapping up their girls’ basketball seasons.

The eyes of the schoolgirl basketball universe shift to southern California. In the nation’s hotbed for basketball, the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Region Open Division is the final meaningful tournament remaining.

There are no additions to the Elite 25 girls’ rankings but expect something to happen by the end of the month when the final rankings are revealed. Since there won’t be any Northern California Regionals or a CIF state tournament, this is the next best thing.

The CIF dropped the 24 brackets–12 boys and girls–on Sunday afternoon, the Open Division was must-see. Seriously, there are four teams that can win it, otherwise it would be an upset. No. 7 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) nabbed the top seed and moved up two spots in the Elite 25 after capturing the CIF-Southern Section Open championship, edging No. 13 Corona Centennial, 83-80, in overtime. Nalani White nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to win it. The game was tied at 71 in the waning seconds of regulation and Centennial had at least two open looks for the win but shots clanged off the rim.

Mater Dei played a cool in the extra session and coach Kevin Kiernan earned his sixth Southern Section title at Mater Dei and 12th overall. The Monarchs (20-0) earned a coveted bye to the semifinals and face Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) or Harvard-Westlake (Studio City) Thursday. The other side of the bracket should see Centennial and Clovis West (Fresno) meet in the semifinals.

The championship is Saturday night. For the complete listing of Southern Region brackets click here.

In Washington, there was closure to a truncated season for Seattle Prep that claimed its first Metro League title in 20 years after knocking off Bishop Blanchet (Seattle), 54-48, last Friday in the final. Since there were no WIAA state championships, this was the ultimate.

Fresno State-bound Tamia Stricklin bucketed 29 points and the Panthers finished 13-0 overall and 10-0 in the league. Prep freshman Molly Moffitt was absence from the final as she left for international duty with the Ireland U-20 National Team or the margin of victory might have been larger.

In Oregon, South Medford (Medford) is closing in on a perfect regular season and the coach Tom Cole is looking forward to an end-of-the-season tournament. Last weekend, the Panthers drilled crosstown rivals North Medford, 67-16. Senior Kaili Chamberlin scored 13 points.

If all goes as planned, Oregon’s top-ranked team will participate in one of two Week 6 16-team tournaments, featuring Class 6A and 5A teams. The double-elimination brackets would be held in the Portland area. Hey, that’s a great way for the Oregon schools to cruise into summer and play for a prize in lieu of no OSAA state tournaments.

So, that’s it for the penultimate rankings this season. We’d like to wish all the dads a Happy Father’s Day on June 20. It’s special day so don’t forget to reach out or say a prayer if dad has faithfully departed.

The Blue Star Media Elite 25 girls’ rankings will return on June 30 for the final time. California finishes this weekend while Washington and Oregon are near the end too.
