Thanks to Ken Pomeroy of kenpom.com, we are able to see some historical trends within college hoops.

We have reached the last week of conference games so it’s fairly safe to say that “what we see -is what we get” when it comes to the imprint of the season statistically.

Here are a few of the notable trends within the sport.

1) 3-point attempts are UP … and way up
38.7% of shot attempts are three-pointers, the most ever since it’s inception in 1987.

We know there has been a lot of analytical support to the 3’s, layups and free throw attempts offensive strategy. Coincidently, team’s are shooting 34.4% from beyond-the-arc after being at 35% or above the prior two years.

2) Teams are shooting at a historic two-point percentage
The current 50.2% is the highest percentage that could be found searching back to 1948. Last year’s 50% was the first time that the shooting percentage hit the 50% ceiling. Now with it shattered, it will be interesting to see how much more it can improve.

3) The free throw rate is at it’s lowest mark
Currently, teams go to the foul line 33.2% of their offensive trips which is the lowest recorded at kenpom.com, which tracks the category since 1987.
What factors are the cause of this trend? Is it officiating or strategy?

4) The 52.1% assist rate hovers around the lowest mark in the 25 years of data -only 2014 had a lower percentage at 51.8%

5) Offensive Rebound % is the lowest it’s been since tracked.
1998 is the first year recorded on kenpom.com, offensive rebound % then was 35.6%, today it is 28.4%.

6) Teams are winning at home 59.2% of the time which in the 22 years of data is the second lowest (2017-59%).
