USA Downs Argentina to Open FIBA Americas

PUEBLA, Mexico – The United States Women’s U16 National Team got their first win at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship by way of a methodical 80 – 48 win over Argentina.  The USA had three players post double digits in the win.  Alexis Morris (2017 – Beaumont, Texas) and Andra Espinoza-Hunter (2017 – Ossining, N.Y.) both had 16 while Honesty Scott-Grayson (2018 – Brick, N.J.) finished with 19.  Morris was 6 of 10 from the floor while Espinoza Hunter helped her cause with 3 for 6 shooting behind the arch. 

The USA held a 17 – 8 edge after the first period and extended the margin to 19 at the half leading 38 – 19.  They could only manage to add three more points to the gap in the third taking a 56 – 34 lead into the final period.  A 24 – 10 run extended the final difference to 32 at the horn.

As a team the USA shot 29 for 69 from the floor for 42 percent.  From deep they got 5 of 31 to drop and at the line connected on 17 of 28 attempts for 61percent.  The United States controlled the boards 57 – 32 but could only manage 14 offensive boards (24%).  They turned it over 20 times which Argentina managed to convert into just 6 points. 

Argentina was held to 15 of 65 shooting and 23 percent.  They were just 3 of 21 from three point range and struggled at the line going 15 for 34 (44%).  In the loss Argentina had 15 turnovers.

The United States is back in action tomorrow facing Honduras with a 3 p.m. EDT tip off.  Friday they take on host Mexico with a 9 p.m. start.  The semis and finals are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
