USA Moves To 2 – 0 With 86 – 41 Win Over Honduras

 

PUEBLA, Mexico—The United States posted their second win in the FIBA Americas U16 Championship by way of a 86 – 41 win over Honduras.  Trailing by one after the first period they utilized a 26 – 7 second quarter to take a 38 – 20 halftime lead.  Honduras hung tight in the third giving up just to more points to the margin before surrounding 34 – 9 in the final period leading to the 45 point difference at the final buzzer.

Honesty Scott-Grayson (2018 – Brick, N.J.) set a USA U16 single game record of nine field goals on her way to a team leading 18 points.  Bexley Wallace (2018 – Pickerington, Ohio) added 12 while Jayda Adams (2017 – Santa Ana, Calif.) and Sedona Prince (2018 – Liberty Hill, Texas) contributed 10 apiece.  Desiree Caldwell (2018 – San Antonio, Texas) set a USA single game record for assists dishing out 10 with just a single turnover in 19 minutes of play.  The Ohio combination of Wallace and Valencia Myers (2018 – Solon, Ohio) had eight rebounds each to set the pace on the glass.

As a team the United States shot 46.7 percent knocking down 43 of their 92 attempts from the floor.  Scott-Grayson was 9 of 16, Wallace 6 for 7, Prince 5 of 8 and Adams went 4 for 8.  As a team the red, white and blue was made just 4 of 17 long balls and 4 of 8 free throws.  They dominated the boards 58 – 27 and pulled 22 offensive rebounds in the process.  Led by Caldwell, the United States posted 26 assists while giving it up just 14 times.  Defensively the USA held Honduras to 23.8 percent shooting and forced them into 21 turnovers.  All 12 USA players saw double figure minutes and each was able to get on the scoreboard.
