VIRGINIA – There are few environments in the game of basketball that are quite the same as a state tournament. The crowds, the emotion, the big time performances, and the fight displayed by seniors playing for just one more high school game.  Enitre towns travel to get behind their teams whether it’s big schools versus small or rural teams facing those from the metro settings.  Either way, the results will forever be etched into state basketball history.

Last week we traversed the state of Virginia covering both the Virginia High School League (public) and Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (private) high school state tournaments. We witnessed two future ACC players Mikayla Vaughn (Paul VI/Notre Dame) and Brianna Tinsley (St. Anne’s Belfield/UVA) battle it out as Paul VI sought its 11th consecutive state title. Oakton’s D-I bound trio of Kailyn Fee (Richmond), Maddie Royle (American), and Delaney Connolly (Loyola MD) were at the top of their games, and Hopewell’s Daijah Jefferson (Georgia Tech) and Tyah Hunter (Furman) wrapped up great high school careers that took their program to new heights. Autumn Hopson (Patirot/Tennessee State) and Drew Freeland (Hidden Valley/Lafayette) helped lead their team to quarterfinal victories, and Highland Springs’ star seniors CeCe Crudup (UNCG), Cam Gatlin (George Mason), as well as Jennifer Coleman (Navy) were impressive on the big stage once more. The depth of talent in Virginia’s 2017 class was on full display as well as evidenced by big games from Woodbridge sharpshooter Hanna Oliver (UVA Wise) and Magna Vista playmaker Taisha DeShazo (Catawba). In a state that features colleges competing at every level, there continues to be talent for them all right here at home.

The VISAA crowned three state champions in The Miller School, Paul VI, and Carlisle on Saturday. The VHSL Championship games are slated for Virginia Commonwealth University this weekend for all six levels.
