BALTIMORE, Md. – The 2012 Beast of the East Tournament brought together 28 high school teams from five states to play in a mixer tournament. Many of the top prospects from the Mid-Atlantic region took the opportunity to showcase their talents for fans, college coaches and scouts. Despite a couple of lopsided contests, there were several noteworthy performances that deserve recognition.
Boogie Brozoski (Long Island Lutheran – Brookville, N.Y.) – In two games the sophomore guard from Queens put up 50 points, including seven 3-pointers. Once Brozoski got into her shooting rhythm she was nearly impossible to stop. Defensively she was just as good racking up several live-ball turnovers that were converted into transition baskets. After her performance this weekend, Boogie is a name that basketball fans in the Charm City will be talking about for a while.
Tyshell King (St. Frances Academy – Baltimore, Md.) – Three months to the day after losing her father, the Georgetown signee put on an inspiring 30-point performance against city rival Milford Mill Academy. King’s offense skills are college ready and she was able to score with ease, especially from beyond the arc. She has stepped up as the vocal and emotional leader of a young team, which a testament to her strength and resolve.
Amari Carter (St. John’s College HS – Washington, DC) – Carter showed why she needs to be mentioned among the top wing guards in the 2015 class. The lefty has an ultra-quick first step in getting to the basket and can score at will. Along with her offensive skill, Carter’s length and lateral speed make her just as tough defensively.
Brianna Fraser (South Shore, Brooklyn, N.Y.) – This 6-3 post player has started to fill out and get stronger. Fraser can control the paint on defense as demonstrated by seven blocked shots against St. John’s. Her post footwork is balanced and she showed a few counter moves that she can consistently score with when double-teamed.
