BENSALEM, Pa. – The states of Florida and Ohio figured prominently in the latest Blue Star Media Elite 25 high school football rankings. In Lakewood, Ohio previous No. 17 Mainland (Daytona Beach, Fla.) lost and in the southwestern part of the state previous No. 22 La Salle (Cincinnati) also fell to a league rival.

With La Salle and Mainland going down that opened the door for No. 21 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) and No. 25 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) to enter the Elite 25 rankings. One thing’s for sure, Mainland was informed less than a week before Saturday’s game at St. Edward that it would be busing the 1,000-mike trek instead of flying to northeastern Ohio. That really stings!

No. 18 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) flops 10 spots after an ugly loss to Deerfield Beach. However, the Raiders had enough equity built up to remain in the Elite 25. One more slip and that’s a different scenario.

Meanwhile, there are three games of note this weekend. No. 21 Mater Dei’s stay in the Elite 25 may be short as No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) invades the Santa Ana Bowl on Friday night. In Texas, Southlake Carroll travels to No. 4 Euless Trinity on Friday and on the same day No. 10 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) hosts Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) in a North meets South matchup from the Golden State.
