Washington, D.C. – Following a busy NCAA recruiting weekend we moved on to a genuine celebration this past Sunday in its own right. Team Takeover welcomed some of the Mid-Atlantic’s top programs to its annual Cinco De Mayo Takeover Invitational this past weekend. With action in gyms around the D.C. Metro area, there was no shortage of talent up and down the age spectrum. Sadly, with no rosters provided, it was difficult to identify and evaluate but here’s a quick snapshot of a dozen players who followed up the recruiting weekend with some solid play.
Kensley Benjamin – 2020 – 5-6 – Point Guard/Guard – Team SOL 2020 – Has some explosion off the bounce…Elevates into the pull up jumper…Tools to be a good on ball defender…Got by opponents with a nice, long crossover
Gi Gi Bolden – 2021 – 5-11 – Guard/Forward – Books and Basketball 17U Platinum – Fierce and tenacious rebounder…Pushes it hard and fast in transition…
Gets to the rim…All of the physical tools…Will make more jumpers as the follow through becomes consistent
Calyanna Cage – 2022 – 5-5 – Point Guard – Metroball DC 15U – Crafty with the ball…Uses a variety of passes…More of a facilitator at this point…Has some burst in her attack…Lob pass can be her go to…Needs to develop scoring as she advances
Abby Carter – 2021 – 5-8 – Guard – Maryland’s Finest – Smooth stroke from deep…Scored on the attack as well…Stood out in her multitude of rebounds from the guard spot
Cate Gentile – 2026 – 5-10 – Forward – WPA Bruins 5th Grade – Lanky…Skill set advanced for age…Loves to face up…Has some good footwork…Will look for the high low pass or drive it to the rim…Hit the baby jumper in the paint…Demonstrated ability to take it coast to coast in transition
Page Greenberg – 2022 – 5-9 – Guard – Team Takeover Foreman – Game has grown…Strong and physically mature…Scorer at the guard spot…Can hit the three off the catch or bounce…Nice runners and finishes on the attack as well
Jasmine Johnson – 2021 – 6-1 – Forward – Team Takeover 16U Orange – At her best with motor going and staying active…More of a face up player on the interior…Can handle in the open court in transition…Ability is there to snatch and rip away rebounds…Shows plenty of fight at times…Output increasing
Yamani McCollough – 2021 – 5-7 – Point Guard – New Jersey Sparks 16U EYBL – Has some ups…Plenty of quickness…Pulls her share of rebounds from the point…Competes hard…Trying some pull ups and runners from mid-range…Still raw offensively but flashes major athletic upside
Chetanna Nweke – 2020 – 6-0 – Guard/Forward – Germantown Lady Panthers 17U Black – Powerful player…Causes problems attacking the rim…Big, strong…Rebounds in droves…Guard-like handles…Bullies her way
Bailey Shriver – 2022 – 5-7 – Point Guard – WPA Bruins 2022 – Efficient player…Keeps it simple…Very effective…Court vision / Eyes in the back of her head…Hit the trey…Got to the rack in transition…Productive scorer
Olivia Westfall – 2021 – 5-7 – Point Guard/Guard – WPA Bruins 2020 Cash – Deep range…Quick trigger on the shot…Gets her feet adjusted quickly…Can get it off on the move…Has some wheels with the ball…Has the handles to play the point some…Smart, locked in player…Can make shots from different spots on the floor
Janiayh Williams – 2020 – 5-10 – Guard – New World Waleed- Long-armed shooter on the wing…Can attack the basket…Better with her dominant right hand…Showed some hops to pull offensive rebounds…Can knock down then three
Travis Ponton first joined the Blue Star family in 2016, and brings with him a decade of women's basketball coaching experience across multiple levels. A 2018 WBCA Thirty Under 30 Award recipient, his most recent stint was on the bench as an Assistant Coach at LIU Brooklyn. He's also served on the staff at Loyola University, Charleston Southern, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Mount St. Mary's. As a successful high school coach for four years in Virginia, Ponton had a hand in helping over 30 athletes take their game to the college level. With a degree in Journalism from Radford University, he has also previously worked with WTVR/CBS 6 Television in Richmond. Ponton still calls central Virginia home.
