NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Year three of the Nike Girls Elite Youth Basketball League now has the field “unofficially” set for the championship round two weeks from now in North Augusta, South Carolina. Nike Nationals will once again host the 24 qualifiers who punched their tickets over the course of two rounds and 10 games starting back in April. Boo Williams and the Nike Invitational played host to all 32 teams for round one while Nashville and Chicago each hosted half the field for their final chance at the most coveted bragging right on the club basketball circuit. Four divisions each featured eight teams with the top six earning the right to compete later this month for all the marbles.
Here in Nashville the Angel McCoughtry and the DeWanna Bonner Divisions sorted out their finalists as part of the Battle in the Boro. In the McCoughtry, Essence led the way with an 8 and 2 mark followed by Boo Williams and North Tartan who both finished at 7 and 3 for the first two rounds. The Cal Sparks and Team Takeover came up short in the Swoosh Sweepstakes Derby. The Bonner saw a three way tie atop the leaderboard. The Fairfax Stars, Tennessee Flight and West Coast Premier all finished at 7 and 3 while defending champs Cal Stars followed at 6 and 4. The two bridesmaids in the Bonner are the Michigan Crossover and newcomer Missouri Phenom.
In Chicago the Nike Tournament of Champions played host to the remaining 16 programs. Cy-Fair posted the league’s only unblemished mark sitting on top of the Tina Charles Division at 10 and 0 with the All Iowa Attack following at 8 and 2. The New England Crusaders and first year Fast Basketball Academy finished out of the running for a trip to Augusta. In the Elena Delle Donne Division DFW T-Jack set the pace at 8 and 2 while the Cal Storm and Team Pointer followed at 7 and 3. A three way tie between the Philadelphia Belles, Midwest Elite and first year Colorado Premier offered some final day drama for the last spot in the money round with the Belles ultimately snagging the position by way of a tiebreaker based on points.
