WESTFIELD, Ind.—While the college coaches may be off the road until July 23rd, the gyms aren’t exactly the epitome of calm and quiet. Over the weekend the beautiful Grand Park Sports Campus and Jonathan Byrd’s Fieldhouse played host to the second annual Rising Blue Star Nationals. The “youth” were out in force for this up and coming event as 36 teams representing six states made their way to this suburb just north of Indianapolis.
Pool play was the order of the day ultimately leading to the crowning of three champions Sunday afternoon. In the 12U Division Team Mac (Ohio) got by the Wisconsin Flight in the finial by a 41 – 28 margin. Flight got some payback in the 13’s as they took top honors back to Wisconsin by way of a 52 – 33 win over the Indiana Flight.
The “Big Dogs” of Rising Blue Star, the 14’s, saw Cincinnati’s Finest take on the Midwest Finest for all the marbles. In the end the Buckeye State claimed the hardware breaking open a halftime tie to claim a 58 – 48 victory. Making the win just a little more impressive is the age difference between Carlton Gray’s Cincinnati squad and their counterparts. The Midwest roster featured nine players from the 2019 class while Gray’s team had one 2019, no 2020’s, six 2021’s and two 2022’s, both of whom started and excelled throughout the event.
Wrapping things up Sunday, All-Star Games were held following the championship contests. The rosters were chosen by the elite in evaluators with the Blue Star Staff getting additional input from both Dan Olson (Collegiate Girls Basketball Report/ESPNW) and Bret McCormick (All Star Girls Report). In all over 100 years of experience was in the gym looking at some of the future standouts on the club and scholastic landscape. One on One competitions were held as well with Charli Turner (2019 – Midwest Finest) and Grace Centrulla (2020 – Cincinnati Heat Premier) sharing top honors.

The future is promised to no one, especially athletes. However there were some players on hand who have some promising basketball on the horizon worth keeping an eye on. As always, they’re in alphabetical and don’t represent “all” of the talent on hand. At this age we’re omitting heights and positions because of the likelihood of changes over time.

Mark Lewis is a national evaluator and photographer for Blue Star Basketball as well as the lead columnist for Blue Star Media. Twice ranked as one of the top 25 Division I assistant coaches in the game by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), he logged 25 years of college coaching experience at Memphis State, Cincinnati, Arizona State, Western Kentucky and Washington State.
