RALEIGH, N.C. – For 20 years now the Deep South Classic has been a staple of girls’ club basketball for the spring. Two decades is a long time, and plenty of talent has descend upon Raleigh over those years. The 2018 edition was no different as teams from all across the United States, as well as Canada, convened in the halls of the Raleigh Convention Center to compete.

As always, there was something for everybody. College coaches from every level could scour the courts to find prospects of all ages and positions to suit their needs. We saw elite, established players, under the radar prospects, and youngsters who are just starting to come into their own.

Destinee Barnes – 2023 – 5-7 – Guard – Carolina Waves 14U – Defense catches your eye first…Has all the physical attributes to continue towards being an elite defender…Strong in getting to the rim…Embraces the contact on the drive…Side steps defenders in the lane to finish…Easy to like where she’s headed 

Reina Bell – 2023 – 5-6 – Point Guard – Vegas Bulldogs 15U – Longer young point guard prospect…Good handle in congested areas…Has some impressive hops…Deny defender…Can play an effective point yet drop 20 at the same time…Going to be a force with maturity 

Madison Booker – 2023 – 6-0 – Guard/Forward – Alabama Southern Starz 2022 Bush – Gets better every time out…Jump shot has developed into a weapon over time…Elevates on everything, boards, shots, contest….Plays exceptionally hard…Rebounds out of area…Face up and drive ability in the high post…Playmaker 

Domonique Davis – 2019 – 5-7 – Point Guard – Lady Flames Elite Diamond – LSU commit…Plenty of tools with the ball…Splits defenders with speed in the open court…Keeps her head up transition leading to strong downfloor passing…Dropping dimes all day…Shoots the three ball…Defensive playmaker as well 

Sania Feagin – 2021 – 6-3 – Forward/Post – GA Pearls 2021 National – Big time frame and the body type…Stretched out over the winter…Fast with the ball…Will block a shot, grab it, and go coast to coast…Mean streak to her game…Gets up and has a long reach…Taking all the right steps 

Malaysia Fulwiley – 2023 – 5-6 – Guard – SC 76ers Cubs 14U – Driver with some major hang time…Smooth with the basketball…Stop and go, change of pace and direction looks easy for her…Scorer’s mentality is clear…Sprinting the length of the floor to block a shot in transition…Super fun to watch 

Adair Garrison – 2021 – 6-1 – Forward – Greensboro Lady Gaters 2021 – Bigger kid…Moves like a guard…Think prototype #4 player…Rim runner catches and finishes with contact in transition…Finishes with either hand…Understands concepts such as the high low…Lots to like 

Melyia Grayson – 2020 – 6-4 – Post – SME Black 16U – Big post…Runs and jumps well for size…Good finisher inside overall…Plays with some physicality 

Emma Hollifield – 2022 – 5-9 – Guard – Carolina Elite Under Armour 15U – Skilled playmaker on the wing…Makes good things happen with the ball in her hands…Vocal and a great IQ…Gets through traffic in transition…Changes direction well…Scores at all levels 

Kennedi Jackson – 2019 – 6-4 – Forward/Post – EP Lady Elite – Has the size and build for the highest level…”Bouncy”…Blocks / changes her share of shot attempts…Has evolved more offensively…Back to basket and 15 footer are coming…Sits down in a stance defensively…One to see 

Gabrielle Johnson – 2022 – 5-6 – Point Guard/Guard – Baltimore’s Charm 15U – Young combo…Makes plays…Has “playground” element to her game…Real wheels and sizzle with the ball…Shoots the three pretty well…Plays with some fire and emotion…Can score in streaks…One to watch 

Cabria Lewis – 2019 – 5-7 – Point Guard – EP Lady Elite – Physical playmaker at the point…Can drive to dish or score…Intense approach…Will be even better as she diversifies her finishing game…Gets to the line…Plays to win 

Jada Malone – 2021 – 6-3 – Forward – Cy-Fair Premier Blue 17U – Well built #4 player type…Will body up on defense…Old school physicality to her game…Catch, handle, and finish in transition…Knows how to use her size…Stand out performer 

Destinee McGhee – 2020 – 6-2 – Post – Alabama Southern Starz 2020 Bush – Big strong post…Gets off the ground at her size…Tough, physical, bruiser type…Gets position where she wants and finishes…Solid passer out of the post as well…Straight up “monster” moments down low 

Jessica Osuanah – 2022 – 6-4 – Post – Cap City Ballerz 14U – Huge young player…Big time frame…Needs to get stronger with the ball…Runs the floor…Can execute a simple drop step…Learning 

Iyana Rogers – 2021 – 6-2 – Forward/Post – Cap City Ballerz 15U – Long limbed interior player…Sitting down and fighting for position in the post…Lots of rebounds…Runs floor consistently…Constantly relocating…Moves without the ball on offense 

Karolline Striplin – 2021 – 6-3 – Post – Alabama Southern Starz 2021 Looney – Strong effort…Tall and long…Extremely mobile…College ready build…Protects the paint with that wing span and mobility…Plenty to like 

Elizabeth Taylor – 2019 – 5-7 – Point Guard – Alabama Southern Starz 2019 Looney – Jump shooting prospect at the point…Likes the mid-range but can pull up from beyond the arc as well…Can score…Gets to the rim…Ability is there to finish around outstretched defenders

Brideget Utberg – 2022 – 5-5 – Point Guard/Guard – Alabama Southern Starz 2022 Bush – Left handed but plays as a righty…Zips pinpoint passes around with ease…IQ combined with strong grasp of fundamentals…Shot looks good and falls…Quick first step as well 

Jenna Walker – 2021 – 5-8 – Point Guard – Alabama Southern Starz 2021 Looney – Smart and skilled…Peskiest defenders don’t disrupt her game…High energy, especially playing the point…Lots of effective no look passes…Knows where to go with the ball…Shoots the three…Can be effective on the wing as well

Mia Xerras – 2023 – 5-6 – Guard – Team Felton 14U – Advanced young shooter…Quick release…Great feet…Knocks it down on the move…Range is there…Attacks off the bounce some as well…Showed a little floater game…Can score a bunch quickly…Handles enough to play some point

Travis Ponton first joined the Blue Star family in 2016, and brings with him a decade of women's basketball coaching experience across multiple levels. A 2018 WBCA Thirty Under 30 Award recipient, his most recent stint was on the bench as an Assistant Coach at LIU Brooklyn. He's also served on the staff at Loyola University, Charleston Southern, Southeastern Louisiana University, and Mount St. Mary's. As a successful high school coach for four years in Virginia, Ponton had a hand in helping over 30 athletes take their game to the college level. With a degree in Journalism from Radford University, he has also previously worked with WTVR/CBS 6 Television in Richmond. Ponton still calls central Virginia home.
